Is it safe to eat fish from the Genesee River or Lake Ontario? The state says it depends

ALBANY, N.Y. — For the first time in nearly 50 years, the state’s Department of Health says it’s safe to eat some fish from the lower Hudson River, from the Catskills to Manhattan’s Battery Park.

The state’s data shows that fish are accumulating less polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), a synthetic chemical found in polluted waterways, in the Hudson River. Now, sensitive groups, such as pregnant women or children under 15, can have an 8-ounce meal a month of striped bass.

The general population can now eat up to four meals a month. However, the Department of Health warns about eating more than what’s recommended and staying away from certain kinds of fish. You can read more here…
