George Eastman Museum removes historic fence to create ‘more welcoming’ space

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The George Eastman Museum is taking down its historic fence.

The nine-foot fence along the University Avenue side of the property was demolished Monday morning. The fence was built in 2004 and has deteriorated over the years.

The museum says removing the fence creates a more open and welcoming space for the community.

“The Neighborhood of the Arts is a very vital part of Rochester and has cultural organizations here,” said Bruce Barnes from the museum. “People here feel we’ve shut them out with this fence, coming to use the space as a park, visiting the museum, just being more welcoming generally.”…
