Planned downtown Rochester grocery store aims to fill longstanding food gap

Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) — Downtown Rochester could soon see its first grocery store in years, with a new concept aiming to bring fresh food within walking distance for residents and workers.

If plans move forward, the store, called Aker Club, could open as early as this summer. The store is expected to take over the former DGX location in the Sibley Building on East Main Street, which closed about a year ago.

The project is designed to address what many consider a persistent problem in the city’s core: limited access to affordable, fresh groceries. Downtown Rochester has long been described as a food desert, with several past attempts at opening grocery stores failing over the years…
