ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Residents are being warned of scammers claiming to be associated with an organization called “Public Clearing House.”
The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office says they received reports of a victim claiming to have won a large cash prize from someone claiming to be associated with a sweepstakes organization.

Here’s what the scammers do — they send a letter to their targets claiming that they won the prize, along with a legitimate-looking check. The victims are told to deposit the check and send the money back for “taxes, processing fees, or insurance costs” before receiving the prize.
However, the checks are counterfeits and will be rejected by the bank, which leaves the victims responsible for any money sent to the scammers…
