Proposed Rock County data center moratorium would allow more time to study development proposals

JANESVILLE — Rock County is joining a few other Wisconsin counties whose supervisors are pushing for a temporary freeze on data center developments.

The Rock County Board of Supervisors has not gone far down any path toward halting data center projects. But a resolution introduced by two supervisors last week seeks an 18-month county moratorium on data center projects — in large part to give county residents more time to learn more about data center projects being proposed here.

It comes as the City of Janesville continues on due-diligence talks with developer Viridian Partners over a proposed, 800-megawatt hyperscale data center at the city-owned site of the former General Motors plant. Meanwhile, the Towns of Janesville, Beloit and Turtle have been in preliminary talks over at least two other data center prospects in Rock County…
