Shelter from the Storm: Super El Niño

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – You may have seen the headlines that a super El Niño is likely to develop this summer. While there is some truth to what you’ve seen, there are also some caveats.

Meteorological summer is underway, and waters off the coast of South America are starting to warm, putting us on track for an El Niño to develop this summer.

The waters are currently around normal temperatures, putting the region in a neutral phase of ENSO, or El Niño Southern Oscillation. As these waters warm and cool, they can produce either an El Niño or La Niña depending on temperature…
