Rockford-area blood bank needs donations ahead of expected high-demand holiday weekend

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – Ahead of the Fourth of July holiday weekend, the Rock River Valley Blood Center calls on the community to donate blood to meet an expected rise in demand.

All donors who give blood at an RRVBC donor center or mobile blood drive between June 29 and July 3 will get:

  • A free American-themed beach towel
  • A free bundlet from Nothing Bundt Cakes (at donor centers only)
  • Automatic entry into the Fuel Your Summer giveaway drawing for a $1,000 gift card from Kelley Williamson

The RRVBC says the Fourth of July holiday is typically a challenging time for it to maintain a stable blood supply. The blood center says traumas typically go up in the summer as more people travel and participate in outdoor activities, while fewer donors have time to give blood due to busy holiday schedules.

RRVBC encourages eligible donors to:

  • Schedule an appointment as soon as possible
  • Visit a mobile blood drive in their community
  • Walk into one of the donor centers in Rockford, Belvidere or Freeport

The blood center says in order to save lives during emergencies, blood needs to be collected in advance. With a shelf life of just 42 days, donations made today make sure blood is available for patients in 13 regional hospitals tomorrow…
