High school students learn to budget at ‘real world’ simulation event in Freeport

FREEPORT, Ill. (WIFR) – Students got a firsthand look at the realities of managing money during the “Welcome to the Real World” simulation Thursday afternoon at Highland Community College.

Hosted by the University of Illinois Extension 4-H program, the event challenged students to make financial decisions based on a career they selected. Each student received a monthly salary tied to their chosen profession before building a budget to cover everyday expenses.

Participants visited stations representing costs like housing, transportation, groceries, clothing, insurance and entertainment, writing checks and making spending decisions along the way…
