The Thread: Remembering Lottie Flowers, the Rockford woman whose killing went unsolved for 22 years

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — For more than two decades, the killing of Rockford community leader Lottie Flowers remained one of the region’s most haunting unsolved murders, leaving family members wondering whether anyone would ever be held accountable.

That question was answered in March 2024 when Winnebago County authorities announced a first-degree murder charge against Omarrian Jones, now 41, in connection with Flowers’ 2002 death, transforming what had long been considered a cold case into an active prosecution.

Flowers, 71, was stabbed to death inside her Newport Avenue home on Feb. 23, 2002. Investigators allege Jones, who was 17 at the time, broke into the home while Flowers was baking and stabbed her more than 20 times. She later died at a local hospital from her injuries…
