Rockford Public Schools cancels after-school activities due to icy weather

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Public Schools announced Tuesday that it was canceling all after-school activities due to the weather.

As freezing rain and icy roads swept through the region late Monday and early Tuesday, the school district did not call off classes today. Rockford Public Works was vigorously salting arterial roads ahead of the rain, and then again this morning.

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY remains in effect for all of northern Illinois until noon. The portion of the advisory that includes south central Wisconsin runs until 2PM.

Snow is expected to fall for a few hours today, with areas along and north of US 20 having the best chance for 1″-2″ snow totals.

A rush of warm air aloft will help bring the potential for evening and overnight dense fog.

Another storm system sliding in from the south will bring the chance for scattered freezing rain at first, with a transition to all rain shortly after daybreak. Wednesday’s chances should conclude either at or shortly after mid-day, leaving us mostly cloudy once again.
