Northern Illinois police advise against travel on icy roads

(WTVO) — Police from Rockford-area law enforcement agencies are advising against travel Tuesday morning after freezing rain overnight blanketed the roads with ice.

Illinois State Police advised postponing unnecessary road travel, saying “We encourage everyone to stay at home if the roadways become too dangerous to travel upon. If you must travel, please reduce your speed, increase your following distance, and always wear your seatbelt.”

In Beloit, police said “the roads are doing their best impression of an NHL hockey rink” and the Stephenson County Sheriff issued a stern warning saying “Do NOT travel unless absolutely necessary! The roads are covered in ice and are extremely dangerous.”

The Ogle County Sheriff issued a warning after a semi trailer got stuck on Woodlawn Road, saying “Wherever possible, stick to main roads that have been [salted],” adding “Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination, reduce speed, and use caution..”

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY remains in effect for all of northern Illinois until noon. The portion of the advisory that includes south central Wisconsin runs until 2PM.
