JPD: Owner of dog shot by Janesville police had been warned before about dogs getting loose

JANESVILLE, Wis. — Janesville police said the owner of the dogs involved in an incident with an officer that left one dog dead earlier this week was warned by the city after the animals got loose last year.

Police said an officer was responding after a 911 caller reported two aggressive German Shepherds Wednesday morning when one of the dogs bit him on the leg. He then fell into a snow bank and the dogs continued attacking him.

Ultimately, the officer shot and killed one dog and used a Taser to subdue the other.

In an update Friday, police said the owner had been warned in April 2023 for their dog getting loose. After the warning, the dogs’ owner installed a fence to keep the dogs in their yard.

Police said that, during Wednesday’s incident, one of the dogs had found a way to open the latch on the fence gate and escape. There had been no prior documented attacks involving the dogs and it is unclear why they were aggressive towards the initial caller or the officer.
