Letter: Race did not play a role in Harvard president’s resignation

On Jan 7, 2023 you published an opinion piece titled, “Harvard president’s resignation reveals reality for Black women leaders.”

I would like the author Brittany Cole to know that I disagree with the narrative that race had anything to do with Claudine Gay’s resignation.

I understand racial inequity in our society, but the case involving Ms. Gay had to do with plagiarism accusations and her congressional testimony related to the Israel-Hamas war in which she refused to say that comments on campus calling for the genocide of Jews violated the schools conduct policy.

The University of Pennsylvania president Liz Magill also resigned after widespread anger over her testimony at the same hearing.

Ms. Magill is a caucasian. Where was the outcry of racial motivation after her resignation?

In the case of Ms. Gay and Ms. Magill, it was their refusal to condemn proponents of genocide that caused the backlash and their resignations.  Race did not play a role in their professional demise.
