Police procession for slain Rockford K9 Nyx to take place Tuesday afternoon

LOVES PARK, Ill. (WTVO) — A final procession for a Rockford K9 killed in the line of duty will take place Tuesday afternoon.

Rockford Police announced the procession will start at Riverside and I-90 at 4:30 p.m. before turning north on Mulford, past Dogwood Pet Hospital, at 4102 N Mulford Road, to Perryville Road, left to Harlem Road, and then to Grace Funeral Home, at 4301 N Main Street.

K9 Nyx was shot Sunday afternoon in the 2900 block of 11th Street while she and her human partner were tracking down a domestic violence suspect.

The Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office said Malik Trotter allegedly shot the dog three times and then engaged in a shootout with Officer Vargas.

Trotter was struck in the leg and is currently at a local hospital receiving treatment.

K9 Nyx succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

“K9 Nyx was a Belgian Malinois from Belarus and completed her training in November of 2018. Nyx was trained in narcotics detection, evidence recovery, human tracking, and apprehension. Nyx was the city’s first female K9,” the Jaimie Cox Foundation wrote on Sunday.
