Man slid off icy Route 2 and into Rock River near Oregon, police say

OREGON, Ill. (WTVO) — Due to icy road conditions Thursday morning, police say a 66-year-old Rockford man lost control of his car while traveling on Illinois Route 2 and plunged into the Rock River.

According to the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to Castle Rock State Park, in the 1300 block of W. Castle Road, around 7:24 a.m. for a report of a car in the river.

Police determined that the driver was piloting a gray 2006 Saturn Ion southbound when he lost control on the frost-covered pavement.

Hollister’s car slid off the road, through the ditch, and into the river, police said. He was able to get out of the car and the river before police arrived on the scene.

Authorities said the vehicle was removed from the river and no citations were issued.
