Byron, Rochelle and Hononegah claim regional wrestling team championships

ROCHELLE, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — High School wrestlers hit the mats for regional action Saturday. At the Class 2A Rochelle Regional the Hubs and the East E-Rabs had big days.

East had four individual champions: Donald Cannon (132lbs), Dana Wickson (144lbs), Ty Smart (157lbs) , and Lee Smith (285lbs.) They also had five wrestlers finish in second place: Joe Young (120lbs.), Malachi Cannon (165lbs.).

Rochelle also had four individual champions: Freddie Hernandez (106lbs), Xavier Villalobos (126lbs.), Grant Gensler (165lbs.) and Kaiden Morris (215lbs.) The Hubs got second place finishes from Deegan Schabacker (132lbs.), Brenden Voight (144lbs.) and Brock Metzger (190lbs.)

Rochelle won the team championship with 190 points to advance to the Dual Team Sectionals. East finished second with 173 points.

At the Class 1A Stillman Valley Regional , Byron won the team championship edging Le-Win/Stockon by one point 196 to 195. Oregon finished third and Dakota was fourth.

At the Class 3A Huntley Regional , NIC-10 champion won convincingly with 249.5 points. Well ahead of runner-up Huntley with had 193 points. Belvidere North finished fourth and Harlem finished in sixth place.
