Hononegah, Rochelle, Byron claim regional wrestling titles and advance many to sectionals

The IHSA boys wrestling regionals played out on Saturday, setting the table for the final backstretch of the season, and, for some, the big finish.

And three of the toughest teams in the Rockford area — Hononegah, Rochelle and Byron — not only got plenty of wrestlers past regionals and into sectionals, but they also secured regional team titles. For Hononegah, it came in commanding fashion.

“Our individual champs, that’s the first things they’re saying: ‘How much are we up by; how’s the team doing,'” Hononegah head coach Tyler DeMoss said after his team won the regional title by 56 1/2 points. “It’s just awesome to see them come together as a team, at an individual tournament…They’re so invested in this team, it’s just cool.”

The top team from each regional advances to team sectionals, which is the week after individual state. The top three individuals from each weight class moves on to next week’s sectionals. Once there, the top four advance to state.
