ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Rockford has another champion in the boxing ring. Jefferson High School junior Gavin Bernal won another Silver Gloves National Championship over the weekend in Independence, Missouri fighting in the 132-pound division.
This is Bernal’s fourth Silver Gloves National Championship. He is the first boxer at the Patriots’ Boxing Club in downtown Rockford to do that.
The Silver Gloves competition is for amateur boxers age 16 and under. It’s sponsored by Ringside Inc. Bernal is 16 so this will be his last Silver Gloves championship, but he’ll go after Golden Gloves championships once he turns 18.
Even though Bernal makes winning championships look easy it, it never is.
“You know, it’s always tough,” said Bernal. “I always have a plan 100% when I’m in that ring, so no matter who I’m fighting, I’m always going 100%. So I was pretty tough on myself.”
” I’ve always been confident my ability, and every every time I go to a tournament, I’m always thinking I’m going to win this.”
