Two Rockford men charged with gun crimes after weekend traffic stops

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Police announced the arrests of two men over the weekend on weapons charges after officers said they found guns in their vehicles during traffic stops.

According to police, on Sunday around 10:30 p.m., officers pulled over Zaakir Abdulhaq, 30, of Freeport, in the area of Kishwaukee and South Avenue. Police said there was marijuana in plain view inside the vehicle, and during a search, they found a 9mm handgun and ammunition.

Abdulhaq was charged with Armed Habitual Criminal, Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Illegal Possession of Ammunition, and Possession of Cannabis.

Two hours later, police said they stopped Kmichael Shellman, 21, at 10th Street and 12th Avenue, and said a loaded 9mm handgun was found in the car.

Shellman was charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

Both men were booked into the Winnebago County Jail.

To reduce gun crimes in Winnebago County, States Attorney J. Hanley announced the creation of a gun court in 2022, in which criminal cases in which a firearm was used will be assigned to a specific judge and attorneys.
