Rockford suspect found hiding in garage attic after lengthy police chase

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Police chased down and arrested Xavier Escobar, 34, in the 2000 block of North Rockton Avenue early morning Thursday.

At midnight, officers said they were on patrol and recognized a white Toyota Corolla driving on Knight Avenue. Escobar was recognized because of a prior incident of fleeing the police.

Authorities said that Escobar turned on to North Rockton Avenue and started to flee when police turned on their emergency lights. Officers said that he was going about 75 miles per hour.

Police said that Escobar started to pull over in the 900 block of Halstead Road. Once authorities turned on their emergency lights, he began to flee again.

During the pursuit, Escobar took Belmont Boulevard and North Main Street. Eventually, he crashed his car on a curb.

Escobar proceeded to flee on foot, said authorities.

Escobar jumped a fence in the 3400 block of North Main Street said the police. A 9mm handgun was found loaded on the floor of his car, according to authorities.
