Suspect in Rockford K9’s killing charged with attempted murder

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The man suspected by police of shooting and killing a Rockford K9 has been charged with attempted murder and faces additional charges in connection to a separate shooting on the same day.

Malik Trotter, 28, faces five counts of First Degree Murder Attempt, Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm at a Police Officer, Armed Violence, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Killing a Police Animal.

He is also charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm, theft, and threatening a public official, according to court records.

The second set of charges stems from a January 28 shooting incident, the same day Trotter is suspected of killing K9 Nyx during a shootout with police on 11th Street.

According to charging documents, Trotter shot at a man earlier that day. It is unknown if the shooting is connected to Nyx’s death.

Nyx was shot shortly after Rockford Police said officers were investigating a “domestic situation” in the 3000 block of Jacqueline Drive.

The State’s Attorney’s Office said a female victim told officers she got into a verbal argument with Trotter, who left the apartment with her phone.
