WIAA regional wrestling: First-place Whitewater advances 9 to sectional; runner-up Jefferson qualifies 6

CLINTON — Whitewater crowned three individual champions and repeated as the team champion by winning the Division 2 Clinton wrestling regional on Saturday with 219.5 points.

Jefferson placed second with 182 points. Both teams advance to the team sectional on Tuesday in Whitewater. Jefferson will face Kewaskum while Whitewater takes on Campbellsport in the semifinals. The winners square off to see which side advances to the team state tournament.

First place finishers for Whitewater at the regional included Jasen Porras (113 pounds), Connor Friend (138) and Sebastian Cuellar (165).

Porras (14-3) pinned Catholic Memorial’s Diego Jaramillo in six minutes and Big Foot/Williams Bay’s Jonah Henningfield at 1:11 to reach the finals, where he scored a 9-7 decision over Jefferson’s Trevor Bruhn.

Connor Friend (33-10) pinned Jefferson’s Thomas O’Brien in 1:49 and East Troy’s Chris Garcia at 1:23 to reach the title match, where he earned a 4-0 decision over Clinton’s D’Angelo Vernon.

Cuellar (25-6) pinned Clinton’s Joe Collins in 0:40 and scored an 18-3 technical fall over Turner’s Carlos Ramirez, then beat Lakeside Lutheran’s Sam Schmidt by an 8-3 decision in the finals.
