Freeport resident detains armed felon until police arrive

FREEPORT, Ill. (WTVO) — A Freeport citizen held an armed felon until police arrived on the scene early Tuesday morning.

According to Freeport Police, officers were called to a residence in the 300 block of N. Foley Avenue for a report of “two suspicious males” who had been at the front door.

While the officers were en route, dispatch informed them that a resident had one of the men detained in the 400 block of N. West Avenue.

Officers took Milan Hughes, 28, into custody. Police also said that a loaded 9mm pistol was found nearby. The gun was reported stolen from a Freeport residence in 2020.

Hughes, a convicted felon, was charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon, along with misdemeanor charges for Obstructing Identification.

He was taken to the Stephenson County Jail, pending the outcome of a detention hearing.
