Several local swimmers advance to state out of Byron sectional

BYRON, Ill. (WTVO/WWQRF) — It was a big day for our local swimmers as they tried to punch their ticket to state at the Byron boys sectional. The top finisher from each event advances to the state meet next weekend in Westmont.

Auburn junior James Murray had a day. He won both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, so he will compete in both of those events at state.

Hononegah had another strong showing. Senior Owen West finished first in the 100 backstroke.

The Harlem Huskies were counting on sophomore Boden Shields in the 100 breaststroke to give them a state qualifier. He edged out Hononegah’s Vito Skominas for the win.

The last event of the day was the 400 freestyle relay and it was a fun one. A rivalry matchup ensued between Boylan and Hononegah. It came down to the wire, but the Titans touched first.
