James Crow, longtime Rockford theater director and teacher, dies at 78

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — James Crow, a longtime Rockford theater director and teacher, has died at the age of 78.

The Rockford Area Arts Council announced Crow’s passing on Thursday.

He served on the Arts Council’s Board of Directors and was the Artistic Director of Creative and Performing Arts School for the Rockford Board of Education. He also served as director for the Pec Playhouse in Pecatonica.

Crow directed numerous performances over the years, including productions of The Sound of Music, West Side Story, Showboat, The Music Man, and Hello Dolly! at Rock Valley College, as far back as 1977.

“James launched the career of many successful people, from Rockford, in the arts and beyond. His wry sense of humor and appreciation of a good laugh were central to his warmth and charm. His generous heart will be missed and our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time,” the Arts Council said in a statement.
