Freeport food bank expands to new location to meet growing demand

FREEPORT, Ill. (WTVO) — The Greater Freeport Partnership celebrated the relocation of its food pantry on Friday.

Organizers marked the opening of the Freeport Area Church Cooperative Food Pantry at 890 W. Galena Avenue with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Executive Director Amy Korte said the organization was outgrowing its space 110 W Main Street, and added the new location is within walking distance of many of the people the pantry serves.

“Before, they had to find transportation to get to the other side of town to go to get groceries, and now they’re able to just walk right to us and walk right back home,” Korte said. “The need in the community are so high for the pantries. We have been able to now reach several of those clients.”

The Greater Freeport Partnership started a furnishing program a few years ago, and the new food pantry and shelter will help them store furniture for assisting community members with housing needs.
