Children’s museum seeks city backing in application for state grant

JANESVILLE — The Children’s Museum of Rock County is asking for a letter of support from the city of Janesville as it applies for a $250,000 grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation.

The request is on the Janesville City Council’s agenda Monday, Sept. 9. The council meets at 6 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 18 N. Jackson St.

The Janesville City Council, earlier this year, offered its financial support to the nonprofit museum group’s plans to redevelop the former First National Bank building at 100 W. Milwaukee St. into a state-of-the art space for children and families.

The city council voted in March to give the nonprofit group behind the children’s museum $2 million toward its $10 million fundraising goal.

The Rock County Board subsequently, in March, denied a request for $500,000 from the museum.

In July, the children’s museum announced it was closing in on its goal, with $8.3 million then raised in its Let’s PLAY Together capital campaign.
