Rockford looks to get nearly 485 acres near airport site ready

Rockford could tap $400,000 in federal grant funding to kick-start a plan to prepare 485 acres northwest of the Chicago Rockford International Airport for development.

Interim Public Works Director Tim Hinkens in a memorandum to City Council said Rockford has missed out on potential economic development opportunities in the area marketed as Cornerstone at Global Trade Park because the site is not considered ready for development.

“To increase site readiness for potential large economic drivers, city staff proposes to examine theenvironmental and planning needs for public improvements, including roadway, bridge and water mainextension,” Hinkens writes.

The land is located on 15 parcels and owned by three different owners south of a recently reconstructed interchange at South Main Street and Bypass 20. It’s about 4.5 miles from downtown Rockford. Hinkens said the project could take advantage of investment in the area and its proximity to the airport which is a “primary job creation driver” in the region.
