Rockford first responders teach kids life-saving information

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The Rockford Fire Department and Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department taught children life-saving information during the kids’ safety fair at UW Health on September 21.

Families flocked to UW Health for the event and kids got tips from first responders on how to stay safe while using interactive displays, climbing rock walls and sliding down inflatable slides.

This is the first time UW Health has hosted the fair since 2019. Organizers said one concerning statistic led them to bring it back.

“Just there’s a need for it, all things safety and kids related. We have seen an increase in SIDS deaths and we wanted to have a venue to bring everything safety to parents to make it easier for them,” said UW Health Director of Women and Children Services Jen Callison.

Sudden infant death syndrome is the leading cause of death in infants between one month and one year old.
