Rockford Speedway giving away pieces of racetrack as souvenirs

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The Rockford Speedway is giving away pieces of tarmac from the former raceway.

According to officials, “Increasing requests for a piece of the track surface are not going unnoticed! For those requesting, we just placed a big scoop from Turn 3 and 4 just outside of the Pit Gates. Please feel free to take a piece for your keeping. Thank you so much for wanting to keep a little piece of Rockford Speedway history with you!”

However, the facility management is warning people to stay out of the track area for safety reasons.

“The grounds are officially considered a demolition site and is strictly off-limits to unauthorized personnel. Hazards include falling debris, unstable structures, and heavy machinery. For your safety, please stay out. Your cooperation is essential for keeping everyone safe,” a statement read.

The Rockford Speedway hosted racing events for 76 years before it’s closure in October.

The Rockford Speedway opened in 1948 and Hugh and Jody Deery took ownership in 1966. After Hugh died, Jody ran it until she passed away last year, at the age of 97.
