Arrest made in early Sunday morning shots-fired incident

JANESVILLE — Janesville police have arrested a 27-year-old Illinois man in connection with an apparent argument early Sunday that led to a gun being fired.

According to a police department release, officers responded shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday to the 1300 block of Hamilton Ave., on multiple calls of two men arguing followed by a gun being discharged.

An armed male ran into the woods prior to the arrival of officers. Several officers searched the wooded area and located the male. He was cooperative with officers and taken into custody, the release said.

The firearm was recovered at the scene.

The suspect, identified as Nicholas E. Russell, of Illinois, was held at the Rock County Jail pending an initial court appearance on a tentative charge of first-degree reckless endangering safety and intoxicated use of a firearm.

Janesville police said this was an isolated incident and there was no threat to the public.
