Rockford man charged with murder in fatal weekend shooting

A Rockford man has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder stemming from a fatal shooting.

According to the Rockford Police Department, 51-year-old Murphy Doss of Rockford was arrested on murder charges, as well as charges for attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon after a shooting Friday night on the city’s west side.

Officers responded to a report of two shootings victims shortly after 10 p.m. Friday at the MaxMart liquor store, 922 Kilburn Ave., police said in a news release.

Two men, ages 30 and 34, were taken to local hospitals with gunshot wounds, police said. The 30-year-old died from his injuries.

Police said witnesses told them that there was a verbal disagreement taking place among a group of people when a man fired a weapon toward the two men and drove away in a vehicle.

The vehicle was located by Illinois State Police at the Belvidere Oasis, police said, and Doss was taken into custody.
