Man killed in Rockford convenience store shooting identified by coroner

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The Winnebago County Coroner has identified 30-year-old Randy Johnson, of Rockford, as the man killed in a shooting at the MaxMart convenience store on Friday night.

According to the Rockford Police Department, officials responded to the MaxMart, at 922 Kilburn Avenue, around 10:08 p.m. and found two men suffering from gunshot wounds.

Witnesses told authorities an argument was taking place between the suspect and a group of people.

Police said Murphy Doss, 51, opened fire at the two victims and then fled the scene.

He was arrested a short time later at the Belvidere Oasis by the Illinois State Police.

The coroner said Johnson died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds.

The condition of the other victim, 30, is unknown.

Doss is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
