Driver in stolen car charged in hit and run crash

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — An 18-year-old in a stolen car was arrested Sunday after a hit-and-run crash while fleeing police.

According to the Rockford Police Department, officers with the Specialized Community Oriented Police Enforcement (SCOPE) team stopped Cervantez Barringer, 18, near Rockton Avenue and Whitman Street around 10:55 p.m.

Police said Barringer took off in the car, which was later determined to be stolen, and hit a truck on School Street. Barringer then ran from the crash scene on foot and was apprehended a short time later.

He has been charged with Unlawful Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Aggravated Fleeing to Elude, Possession of Burglary Tools, Criminal Damage to Property, Resisting Arrest, Possession of Ammunition, Hit & Run, and Suspended Driver’s License.

He was booked into the Winnebago County Jail.
