Freeport felon charged with domestic battery, weapons violations

FREEPORT, Ill. (WTVO) — A Freeport felon has been charged in a case of domestic battery after police responded to a home Saturday and found an injured woman.

According to the Freeport Police Department, officers were called to a residence in the 300 block of N. Galena Avenue and met with a woman “who had visible injuries.”

Willaim Higgs, 55, was arrested at the scene.

Police said Higgs was found to have two semi-automatic pistols and ammunition inside the home, which he was legally prohibited from possessing, due to his prior criminal convictions.

He was charged with Domestic Battery and Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a Felon.

Higgs was transported to the Stephenson County Jail, where he awaits the outcome of a pretrial detention hearing.
