New Rockford grocery store coming to former Kishwaukee Street Dollar General

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — A new $2.1 million grocery store is coming to Kishwaukee Street.

Rancho Supermarket will be going into the former Dollar General store at 1405 Kishwaukee Street, next to McDonald’s and Broadway.

Property owner Rolando Mendez will benefit from a grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce to support or establish new grocery stores in areas the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has defined as a “food desert,” where access to fresh food is limited.

“The full-service grocery store, located at the intersection of Kishwaukee and Broadway, will offer fresh produce, deli, bakery and hot foods. Rancho Supermarket is expected to open in Spring of 2025,” the City said in a release.

In Belvidere, the Belvidere Fiesta Market, at 400 W Chrysler Drive, will receive nearly $160,000 for new, energy-efficient refrigerated produce cases.

In total, 11 Illinois grocery stores were the beneficiaries of $7.9 million in grants.
