Suspect in Rockford shooting killed in shootout with DeKalb police

DEKALB, Ill. (WTVO) — Police in DeKalb shot and killed the suspect in a Rockford shooting after a hostage standoff and subsequent shootout early Wednesday.

According to Rockford Police, officers investigated a “shots fired” call around 9:53 p.m. in the 4800 block of Creek View Road.

At 11:03 p.m., the DeKalb County Sheriff’s office was notified that the suspect’s vehicle’s registration was linked to a DeKalb address.

Traffic cameras later identified the vehicle at Peace and Mercantile Drive, police said in a press release.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputies spotted the vehicle at the registered address and attempted to stop it, but the driver fled the scene, initiating a chase that ended on Rich Road, west of Nelson Road. Authorities said stop sticks were used to deflate the vehicle’s tires.

At that point, police said they determined that one of the occupants of the car was armed with a handgun and holding the other hostage.
