ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Local veteran Laverne Moss was the recipient of new siding and windows, courtesy of Window World of Rockford.
Moss served in the United States Navy for 22 years, achieving the rank of Chief Petty Officer.
At home, Moss worked as an election officer and also volunteers to feed the homeless at the Veterans Drop-In Center.
“As far as I’m concerned, no matter how far back they go, even ones we have now, they’re younger, we call them young bucks, they’re battle buddies and battle buddies always need help,” Moss said. “It never looks like it, but so many times a lot of the stuff is inside. So, you got to be there for them, even if you don’t do anything but make a meal.
Moss said she comes from a family dedicated to service: her father served in World War II and her mother was a “Rosie the Riveter.”
She was chosen as the contest winner from more than 400 nominations, Window World representatives said.
