Coroner identifies victim of fatal Rockford crash involving bicyclist

The Winnebago County Coroner has identified the bicyclist who died in a crash with an SUV early Monday morning on Rockford’s northwest side.

The bicycle-versus-vehicle collision took place shortly after 7 a.m. near Latham Street and Deborah Avenue.

The coroner has identified the bicyclist as Sylvia Coton, 65, of Rockford.

According to a Tuesday news release from the coroner’s office, a preliminary investigation revealed that an SUV struck Coton while she was riding her bicycle. 911 was called and Rockford Fire Department along with Rockford Police Officers responded to the crash.

When first responders arrived on scene, Coton was trapped beneath the SUV and determined to be beyond resuscitation. She was pronounced dead at 7:45 a.m.

An autopsy was performed Tuesday.

The cause of death is pending further investigation. The Winnebago County Coroner’s Office and the Rockford Police Department continue to investigate Coton’s death.
