Rockford man accused of holding a victim at gunpoint

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Police arrested Malek Freeman, 18, for allegedly pointing a handgun at a man’s head on New Year’s Day.

Around 7:40 p.m., officers were sent to the 2200 block of Logan Street for an aggravated assault incident. The victim was following the suspect, according to court documents.

Upon arrival, the man told authorities Freeman pointed a handgun at him and was inside the Short Stop Convenience Store located on North Main Street. Police attempted to arrest the suspect but he initially broke free, according to court records.

Officials eventually took Freeman into custody.

Police found a handgun with an extended magazine and a red dot sight attacked inside his jacket, according to court documents.

Freeman is charged with possession of a firearm without a FOID, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and resisting an officer.
