ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) – A man has pleaded guilty to attempted murder, nearly two years after he stabbed his ex-girlfriend multiple times in Rockford.
Twenty-eight-year-old Stillman Cunningham entered the guilty plea on Jan. 2 and now faces a Feb. 27 sentencing hearing in front of Winnebago County Judge Jennifer Clifford.
The charge against Cunningham stems from what authorities say was an argument in the 900 block of 22nd Avenue on Jan. 30, 2023, during which Cunningham grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed the victim 16 times.
In exchange for his guilty plea, the remaining 17 charges against Cunningham were dismissed.
According to court records, Cunningham, who’s originally from Las Vegas, told police he stabbed the victim because he, “just wanted her to stop screaming.” He faces a minimum of 20 years in prison.
