Illinois bill to ban Native American mascots could cost schools thousands

Some school officials are considering what will be required of their districts if a bill banning Native American-themed mascots in the state becomes law.

House Bill 1237, which passed the Illinois House with a 71-40 vote, would prohibit schools from using Native American names, logos or mascots.

For Meredosia-Chambersburg schools, home of the Indians, the initial costs to change their mascot likely would be around $30,000 to $40,000, Superintendent Thad Walker said…
