ROCKFORD — Rockford Area Habitat for Humanity on Tuesday celebrated the work of Rockford Public Schools students who helped build three homes from the ground up to give local families an affordable place to live.
The work from East, Guilford and Jefferson high school students also marks a milestone for Habitat, which has now built 30 homes in a neighborhood south of Sandy Hollow Road. When families move into those homes in roughly five to six weeks, it will mark the end of Habitat’s yearslong work in the neighborhood along Holiday Drive.
“I remember when we first got this land, this is the lot that we toured with the donor,” Keri Asevedo, executive director of Rockford Area Habitat for Humanity, said Tuesday while standing in front of a home built by East High School students. “We just kind of looked around and there was really kind of nothing in this neighborhood.”…
