Scam Alert: Fake Norton Emails Trick Illinois Residents

I’ve been seeing more and more people in Rockford falling for scams that are pretending to be from Norton. If you’ve received an email like this, please double-check to make sure it’s not a spam email.

The NextDoor App is so helpful in times like this. You get to see what’s happening around your neighborhoods and all around the city. Someone posted on the App warning others to be careful if they receive this email from Norton.

The subject line usually will say, “RE: Invoice Delivered” or something of that nature to catch your eye. It’s basically clickbait to get you to question what you had delivered.

When you open the message, it’ll look like a legitimate invoice for several hundreds of dollars the “you” supposedly paid. They’ll say, “Please call at [insert phone #] if you did not make this transaction.” This is where they’ll try to empty your bank account.

When you call the number, the person on the other end will pretend to help “reverse the charge”, ask for all your banking information, and withdraw hundreds, even thousands, of dollars from your account. Norton will never send you invoices out of nowhere or ask you to call a sketchy phone number that’s not connected to Norton…
