Timeline unclear as IDOT addresses structure issues with Kishwaukee Bridge

WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Ill. (WIFR) – Of all the bridges over state roads in the Winnebago County region, only one is in critical need of repair, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. The problems stood out during routine inspections of structures throughout northern Illinois.

“We’ve done a check of the bridge and found a couple areas that have some concerns,” explained Jayme Schiff, IDOT engineer of bridges and structures.

The 36-year-old Kishwaukee River Bridge on Interstate 39, just south of Rockford, is heavily traveled and shows signs of wear and tear. According to Schiff, finding a bridge with critical issues like this does not happen often…
