Winnebago County, IL – Drivers near Rockford should prepare for delays starting next week as the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) shifts traffic on Interstate 39 for bridge repairs.
According to IDOT, northbound I-39 traffic will be moved onto the southbound bridge over the Kishwaukee River, located just south of Rockford. The change allows crews to repair the northbound bridge, which was flagged during a July inspection for critical structural issues.
Once the new traffic pattern is in place, one lane will remain open in each direction across the southbound bridge. The 20-ton weight limit will be lifted, and the Baxter Road ramp to northbound I-39 will reopen. IDOT expects the lane shift to last through early spring while repairs are completed…
