Field trips. Book Fairs. TV carts. What do they all have in common? They’re all things I remember so clearly back when I was in school.
My ten-year high school reunion is this year (yes, I’m definitely aging myself), and I’m just thinking back to all the things that are so different this day in age. I surprised a teacher and her 3rd grade class last week with gift for being our Teacher of the Week, and all the kids had Chromebooks. I didn’t see one pencil in sight!
I said to the kids, “I never had a Chromebook. I had a thousand pencils and some notebook paper. We had to write everything!” and they were so shocked. One kid even asked if I knew what colored pencils and markers were! I might be old, but not ancient haha.
Anyway, whether you went to school in Rockford, Loves Park, Belvidere, of Freeport, we all pretty much had the same experience. Right?! Here’s what I remember from being in school, when Chromebooks didn’t exist yet!
5 Grade School Memories Every Illinois Kid Remembers
- TV Carts & VHS Days (the best day of the week!)
- Field trips to Chicago museums
- Book Fairs that my parents never gave me money for
- Colorful gym parachute game
- Milk cartons with missing kids’ faces on them
I also remember when Smart Boards first came out. We thought it was the coolest technology ever! They glitched so much, but they beat projectors…
