Work begins to turn Rockford’s Davis Park into a regional destination and daily hub of activity

ROCKFORD — Work to revamp Davis Park into both a regional destination for entertainment and a daily source of recreation officially got started Friday after decades of planning.

The riverfront park, at South Wyman and Chestnut streets, will be overhauled with a new concert stage, concessions, restrooms, riverwalk, skatepark and universally accessible playground. The $15.5 million project also includes improvements to the shoreline and grounds of the park.

“It will offer our residents — those long time and more experienced residents as well as those new residents that we’ve seen come to downtown — a place that they can easily access and enjoy every single day,” Mayor Tom McNamara said at a groundbreaking ceremony Friday. “It will also serve as a catalyst to our downtown, sparking new activity and events that will help energize the heart of our city.”…
