WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Ill. (WIFR) – Facing a budget deficit of $3.1 million, the Harlem School Board weighs a decision to close schools and make major cuts to some programs, including early childhood education.
Harlem School District Superintendent Terrell Yarbrough and administrators offer a plan they say addresses an unfortunate financial situation, declining enrollment and underutilized buildings. But leaders say it also allows for better collaboration and specialization.
Under the proposal, the district would close Maple and Olson elementary schools and move those students to one of the remaining buildings. All schools would be split into two “bands”- East and West.
Presenters said students in the “west” band would start out with K-1 at Parker Center, grades 2-3 at Loves Park Elementary and grades 4-5 at Ralston Elementary. The “east” band would start with K-1 at Windsor, grades 2-3 at Rock Cut Elementary and grades 4-5 at Machesney Elementary. Marquette would be where the district would house its Magnet Programs, PI, EC, HoLA, Fine Arts and ALP until it is phased out…
