Local baker’s journey to national competition inspired by Mother

FREEPORT, Ill. (WTVO) — A Freeport woman is in the running to be named the 2025 National Greatest Baker Competition.

“Senior year of high school, my mom had a pretty severe heart attack. It scared me, and I was afraid I was going to lose her. And obviously, she was a chef before me. So, at the very last minute, I changed my major. I went in for hotel and restaurant management instead,” said 32-year-old Dallas King.

King is ranked seventh out of over 150,000 contestants. The contest is run by Colossal, a fundraising organization. The donation-based voting system raises money for the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation, supporting children battling cancer. King says she entered in honor of her mother…
